A Classical ballet is a stunning performance of graceful movements, usually set to the moving sounds of an orchestra. Classical ballets tell a fascinating, romantic story through both sight and sound, and is capable of moving an audience to tears of emotion. The traditional and formal style of ballet includes meticulous techniques like pointe work and high extensions. The variations in ballet depend on the origin, such as Russian ballet and Italian ballet. In the former, there are more high extensions and dynamic turns, and in the latter, there is quick and extensive footwork.
Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music.
